Marvel´s Daredevil 60th anniversary
I had the privilege of working alongside Marta Pedroso in creating the scenography and sound stage for the 60th anniversary of Daredevil, the Marvel comics blind hero, at AmadoraBD annual comics fair. It was as exciting as it was challenging.
Since then, Daredevil has become one of my favorite Marvel characters because of his ability to use echolocation to see and because of his anti-hero status. This inspired us recreate the dark atmosphere of New York´s Hell´s Kitchen through sound.
It was also the first year that sound and visuals were used to create an inclusive and sensorial experience for blind and deaf visitors by using a bass shaker speaker attached to the wall and of projected water cymatic effects. Sound waves could be seen, much like the way Daredevil actually "sees" the world around him and vibrations felt through the rumble of frequencies.
The process for devising the projected sound shapes involved a lot of trial and error using a mono synthesizer. Some sounds dont have the power to move through water and become visible. The final result was an interesting combination of sweeping through audible frequencies and bursts of low frequency content.
